From Copenhagen to Corpus: Nekromantix Invade the Coast

Fresh off an almost inconceivably energetic set by "street rockers" SACK (powered by about half a dozen beers), the Thursday evening crowd at House of Rock eagerly awaited Danish psychobilly legends, Nekromantix, to hit the stage. Fronted by Kim Nekroman and his iconic coffin-shaped upright bass, the band has spent over three decades bringing their trademark blend of macabre fun and high-energy performances to audiences around the world and on June 11th, it was Corpus Christi's turn to witness the spectacle.

For a few moments of near complete darkness, the atmosphere in the room was eerie, yet enthralling. One by one, each member's shadow could be seen entering the stage from behind the curtain if you squinted. As Kim walked over and picked up his bass from the ground, the audience erupted and excitement filled the room. There was little time for fans to prepare before the band surged into the first song. It was immediately clear how Nekromantix has captivated fans for over 37 years.

Kim's fingers were like waves on the strings of the Coffin Bass, plucking and galloping effortlessly throughout the show. A maestro of sorts, his energy never wavered nor did his fingers tire. Spinning his bass on his left hand as smoothly as a basketball player would spin a basketball, saddling it as a jockey would mount a horse, even playing it with his elbow and tongue – on display was pure talent and seasoned showmanship. He played with the same intensity during each song and the night's performance started and ended with a thrill.

In between songs, the banter from Kim set the tone. He was charming and magnetic, allowing the crowd to participate by asking if anyone owned a "cool car" and playfully responding. Even though a few technical issues affected the sound, the band itself never slowed or faltered. True professionals in every sense. It was the kind of show you didn't want to end; the kind of show that nearly made me forget I needed to take photos because the energy was so exhilarating. Only Kim Nekroman himself can decide when it's time for Nekromantix to retire, so by all means, see them before that time comes.
