**Sevendust** and **Theory of a Deadman** have shared stages — and a friendship — dating all the way back to 2002\. More than two decades later, the bands have joined forces to co-headline the **Dead / Seven** tour, which hit Concrete Street Amphitheater in Corpus Christi this past Saturday, September 12\. Although the two bands approach hard rock from different directions (**Sevendust's** soulful alternative metal vs. **Theory of a Deadman's** polished post-grunge), the pairing carried the natural chemistry of longtime friends reuniting onstage. Along for the ride was **Return to Dust** who opened the night, adding a younger generation of grunge-influenced rock to a lineup shaped by decades of history.

****Return to Dust**

It surprised me to learn that **Return to Dust** had only formed in 2022 and landed their first national tour just two years later as support for **Sevendust**. By then, the Los Angeles quartet — vocalist/guitarist **Matty Bielawski**, vocalist/bassist **Graham Stanush**, guitarist **Sebastian Gonzalez**, and drummer **London Hudson** — had begun gaining attention with their **Jim Kaufman**\-produced debut album. They continued to quickly build their fanbase with appearances at Welcome to Rockville, Inkcarceration, and Sonic Temple.

When the band hit the stage and launched into "Black Road," the attention surrounding the guys began to make sense. The band established the intent of their performance immediately. They were here to prove themselves to a new audience in Corpus Christi.

There was something particularly striking about watching musicians this young channel the essence of '90s grunge with such conviction. But they also showcased their range. A little over halfway through the set, they shifted gears with a cover of **Outkast's** "Hey Ya!" Unexpected covers are always fun in a live setting, especially when a band reshapes the original to fit their own identity.

"Bored" and "Belly Up" closed the set and **Return to Dust** had loosened up the crowd and prepared them for the rest of the night. Their rise to fame has happened quickly, but the energy behind their live show suggested there's still much more ahead. That youthful intensity soon gave way to the seasoned presence of **Theory of a Deadman**, who arrived with a catalog stretching back more than twenty years.

****Tyler Connolly of Theory of a Deadman**

With eight studio albums spanning more than two decades, Canadian rock veterans **Theory of a Deadman** have an extensive catalog at their disposal. Still, they looked to their newest material first, opening with "Barricade" from their latest EP, *Part 1: Funeral Songs*. Released on September 4, the EP was barely a week old when fans in Corpus Christi had one of their first opportunities to hear the newly released material live.

Frontman **Tyler Connolly** looked every bit of a classic rock star with his perfectly styled pompadour and guitar in hand. His stage presence also had a playful side. **Connolly** pulled out a Polaroid camera during the third song, "Blow," and pointed it toward fans and tossed the photos in the crowd. What a great souvenir, right?!

**Theory of a Deadman** understands the communal appeal of a rock show. Their songs are built around blunt lyrics, instantly recognizable hooks, and songs that invite everyone within earshot to join in. With the audience singing along, the show was starting to feel like a straight-up rock & roll party. The audience joined in enthusiastically for both the band's heartfelt cover of **Alice In Chains'** "Nutshell" and their own longtime favorite, "Santa Monica."

After performing "Not Meant to Be," they launched into another cover, this time it was **Chris Isaak's** "Wicked Game." Not giving the audience a chance to rest their pipes, they broke into a medley of classics that even I struggled to not sing along to: "Don't Stop Believin'," "A Thousand Miles," and "Jump."

But they weren't done yet!

A few more **Theory** staples like "Lowlife," "Hate My Life," and "Rx (Medicate)," and they were back at it with "Paradise City," the iconic "Crazy Train" riff, and "Song 2." It was truly a great set for fans of rock music thanks to the band's combination of rock-radio essentials and various short covers. But with **Sevendust** still to come, the evening was about to take a considerably heavier turn.

****Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust**

Corpus Christi at its heart is a metal city — and the crowd did not shy away from letting it be known. **Sevendust** walked on to the stage to loud chants. "Sevendust! Sevendust! Sevendust!" The energy at the venue was about to explode. The opening notes of "One" blasted through the speakers and the show was underway.

After blowing through "Denial," "Is This the Real You," and "Praise," the crowd really started to get into it and some mosh pits formed. **Lajon** met the crowd's enthusiasm with warmth and gratitude. He frequently blew kisses into the audience and formed hearts with his hands, acknowledging the fans' love. His gestures revealed genuine affection.

Early in their set, **Lajon Witherspoon** turned his attention to the women in the audience and encouraged them to claim their place in the pit. It was an example of the connection **Witherspoon** would maintain with the female audience throughout the performance. Whenever any pits formed, **Lajon** specifically encouraged the men in the crowd to involve **Sevendust's** female fans.

After noticing younger fans in attendance, **Witherspoon** thanked the "mommies and daddies" who had brought their children to the show and helped introduce another generation to the band. He also called a member of security over for a selfie during the performance. The band made sure the audience could feel that this was a family gathering, not simply another stop on the tour. **Lajon** even mentioned that he didn't want to leave Corpus and could see himself buying a house in the city.

"Angel's Son" was an emotional performance and everyone in the crowd followed **Lajon's** request to put their phones up in the air. During "Black," four consecutive female crowdsurfers made their way to the front and **Lajon** was so happy to see it that he high-fived every one of them. Only two songs were left, "Rumble Fish" and "Face to Face," but neither the audience or **Sevendust** showed any signs of slowing down at all.

The night ultimately came down to connection — between longtime friends sharing a tour, between established bands and newcomers to the scene, and between the musicians and the people gathered at *Concrete Street Amphitheater*. **Sevendust** carried that connection through the end of the night, sending Corpus Christi home with ringing ears and a sincere invitation to remain family.
