Tony Iommi Announces First Solo Album in 21 Years, Shares Single 'World Alone'
The Black Sabbath guitarist has nothing left to prove — and eight new tracks ready to prove it anyway.
Tony Iommi has announced From the Dark, his first solo album in 21 years.
The Black Sabbath guitarist will release the eight-track record October 23 through BMG, marking his first solo full-length since 2005's Fused. Iommi introduced the album with its first single, "World Alone," which premiered during a global streaming event in his hometown of Birmingham, England.
Powered by Iommi's signature down-tuned riffs and guitar solos, "World Alone" features Jørn Lande on vocals alongside bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil. Its accompanying video places a character known as The Believer inside a dystopian video game where he must fight for his life and salvation.
Lande appears throughout From the Dark and shares writing credits on all eight songs. Iommi co-produced the album with longtime collaborator Mike Exeter, while Queen guitarist Brian May contributes a guest solo to "Death Wake."
"It's an album we've really enjoyed making," Iommi said. "We’re not trying to prove anything — it's a great album, it rocks!"
A limited-edition seven-inch pressing of "World Alone," backed by an instrumental version of the track, will arrive September 4. Deluxe editions of From the Dark will also include Iommi's previously released instrumentals "Scent of Dark" and "Deified."
